"Are All Those Kids Yours?"

I had plans all weekend of getting to Michael's, but somehow I just never made it there.  My hope was to go there without any kids, but instead I went this morning with all 3.  Why do I continue to do this to myself?  I ask myself this question all the time because everytime I walk out of that store with my kids, I swear to myself I will never do that again.  Here's how this morning went....

When I pull into the parking lot, I remind everyone of the rules - (1) no taking things off shelves without asking me and (2) no asking for anything.  Only 2 rules, so it should be pretty easy (at least I think so).

When we get inside, my 19 month old wants to sit in the seat of the shopping cart and my almost 3 year old daughter wants to sit in the back of the shopping cart.  I'm thinking to myself "yay!" - only my 4 year old is "loose" in the store.  I try to hurry and get to all the aisles I need to before I know someone starts to fuss.  But, my older daughter decides she needs to use the potty.  Of course!  Do you know that everytime I take her to either Michael's or JoAnn's she needs to use the potty?  (Even she has gone right before we leave the house and she's had nothing else to drink since then).  For some reason she loves to complain about the smell in the Michael's bathroom (very strong cleaner) and she loves to comment about the hole in the wall at JoAnn's.  Can I just say - frustrating!

And then my 4 year old spots some toy that he really, really, really wants.  Tears come and he then follows me down each aisle crying about how much he now "needs" that toy.  Yes, I was that annoying mom in the store who lwas oosing total control of her kids....

So once one starts, they all seem to chime in....then the baby started to get upset because her older sister wasn't letting her hold anything that mommy was buying.  And now she is refusing to sit in the cart so I must carry her if I don't want her standing.  I rush to get in line and as my older daughter is helping to put everything on the counter, her elbow hits a box of huge bouncy balls (seriously, who puts a box of bouncy balls on a too small counter at the check out ares?) so they all go bouncing down to the ground.  As my son tries to collect them, I go ahead and pay (and forget to use my 40% off coupon).  In the midst of all that, the woman behind me (who is probably close to 80 years old) asks "are all those kids yours?".  With a smile on my face, I look her in the eyes, and respond "yes, of course they are".  Her response "oh".  What was she trying to get at?  I only have 3 kids.  So many other people have many more kids than I do.  And it really isn't all that uncommon to families to have 3 kids.  And what business is it of hers?

So anyway, I get handed my receipt (and see a new 40% off coupon which triggers my memory of the coupon I forgot to use) and am about to walk away when my son comments that he's still holding the package of buttons and scotch tape that I wanted to buy - he had never put them on the counter. Ugh!  So I go to pay for those and ask if I can return the expensive item from before to use my coupon I had forgotten to give her.  Well, that would entail calling a manager up front to handle the return.  Doesn't she realize that I just want to get out of there as quickly as possible?

So I pick up a bag of candy corns and use my 40% coupon on the $2.50 scotch tape.  And how I would have loved to enjoy those candy corns on the drive home, but.....(I'll save that story for tomorrow)....

Getting to Know You...8/29

Here's to the start of another week......Getting to Know You from Mannland5....

Getting to know YOU

Here's this week's questions:

1. If you accidently knick a car in a parking lot..Do you leave a note or do you get the heck out of there? Depends if there is any significant damage - if there was, I would leave a note; if you couldn't tell, I would get out quick!

2. Love your body or plastic surgery? I wouldn't say I love my body, but I couldn't go through with plastic surgery either.

3. What about your favorite blog(s) continues to drive you back? I like blogs that I can relate to

4. What percent of your blog is BS just to make your life seem more interesting than it really is? None - which is why my blog can get quite boring :)

5. If you had to give up one type of meat for the rest of your life, what would it be? Probaby pork - I was going to say red meat, but every once in awhile I love a good cheeseburger or filet mignon!

6. How often to you eat out? Hardly ever - maybe once or twice a month.

7. Skinny jeans or boot cut jeans? Definitely boot cut - I'm too afraid to try on skinny jeans for fear I will look like I've gained another 15 lbs.!

8. If you caught your spouse cheating would you forgive, divorce, or plan your kill? Divorce (I'm pretty sure with thoughts of option C as well!) - let's just hope I never have to know for sure what I would do :)

Marcal Small Steps Product Review & Giveaway

I was very excited when I was contacted by Marcal to review a few of their Small Steps products.  As you know we have been taking many steps over the past couple of years to live a more green lifestyle in our house.  I think it is very important for all of us to take small steps each day to help our environment. I also think it is even more important to teach each new thing we've learned about saving our planet to our children, as they (along with their own children) will be here much longer than you or I.

So when I received a big box in the mail, my kids were ecstatic and couldn't wait to see what was in it.  When I openned it and all they saw were paper towels, tissues, toilet paper and napkins their excitement quickly dwindled.  I think they were secretly hoping for some toys!  So as they were sitting with me, we emptied out the box together and I explained a few things to them about these "special" paper products:

  • All of the items were made from 100% recycled paper content (since they come with me to drop off our recycling each week at our transfer station, they thought it was pretty cool that these could have been made from some of the paper we dropped off to recycle)
  • No new trees were cut down to make these
  • There was no chlorine bleach used for whitening (they didn't know what chlorine bleach was since it hasn't been in our house in over 2 years)
  • There were no added fragrances or dyes (they liked this too because my son gets frustrated with me at the store all the time when he wants some "cool" shampoo or lotion and I tell him he can't get it because there is fragrance or too many chemicals in it)
  • Marcal has been recycling since 1950 which has resulted in millions of trees being saved
  • And that if every home in America switched to any Marcal Small Steps product just once this week, then together over 1 million trees could be saved

As much as we have been working on being a more green family, I can honestly say that we do not regularly purchase recycled paper products.  This is for a few reasons; (1) the few we've tried I wasn't that impressed with because they were very rough (not soft to touch at all) and very thin (so not absorbent) and (2) we've switched to reusable cloth versions to replace some of our disposble products (ie: napkins and paper towels).  I would love to find a recycled product though that I am happy to purchase where we do not use a cloth alternative (or as a backup for our cloth alternative).

So how did we like the Marcal Small Steps products in our house?
Overall, I liked all of the products - here is a rundown of each product we tried and tested:

Napkins - we received a sample of standard napkins and a sample of dinner napkins. Let me just tell you my husband was thrilled to have disposable napkins in the house!!! We usually just use cloth napkins at our house, so this was a real treat. Since we were leaving for vacation a week after I received the napkins, I saved them to bring along with us. As much as we use cloth for most things at home, when I'm on vacation, I'm all about making things easy for me - and not having to wash cloth napkins for a week was a treat for me! The napkins worked great - they were thick enough to clean off some of the messiest kid fingers we had during vacation (ie: smores, ice cream, pb&j sandwiches - need I say more?) And the dinner napkins were more formal and looked nice on a table set for dinner!

Paper Towels - the paper towels worked very well!  They were very absorbent and comparable to any other brand of paper towels that I have used.  Their paper towels come in two different styles: standard and the "u-size-it".  I also saved our paper towels for vacation (we use mostly cloth paper towels in our house, but I always keep a roll on hand for those unusual messes that I just want in the garbage a.s.a.p.).  So I felt that I was able to do a more thorough review of them while using them on vacation - they worked great at keeping the kitchen clean in the rental house! With a house full of 7 adults and 3 kids I can't even begin to explain some of the cleanups we had!

Toilet Paper - everyone in the house liked the toilet paper. I was actually surprised at how soft it was because other recycled toilet papers we've tried felt more rough and like a sheet of paper to the touch.  My daughter loved how their where hearts on the toilet paper!  To a toddler, that was the most impressive and important thing about them!!!

Tissues - the tissues have also worked well for all of our runny noses.  I had a cold (maybe allergies) for a few days so was using them then.  And of course whenever one of my kids is crying about something, they always need a tissue afterwards to wipe their tears and blow their nose!  The only complaint I had about the tissues were that they were not super soft.  So if you have a really bad head cold (like I often get in the winter) and end up having to blow your nose non-stop all day (and night), I can definitely see these tissues leaving my nose red and hurting.  I think that having them in the house for daily use is great - why buy tissues that are not made from 100% recycled materials.
Overall, I also liked how all of the products were not that light brown/beige color like most other recycled paper products are.  I know it's not that big of a deal, but these recycled paper products just looked "cleaner" because of their more white color.  After having tried these products, I must say that I will definitely be making a more conscious effort to buy these going forward.  Especially with their budget friendly prices compared to other recycled products, why wouldn't I?

So are you interested yet in trying some Marcal Small Steps products in your own home?  Marcal was generous enough to offer one lucky reader 3 coupons for a Marcal product up to $5.99!

Mission - Back To School

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Mission Foods. All opinions are 100% mine.

Mission – Back To School
Are you looking for some new ideas for lunches for the upcoming school year?  Mission Tortillas are a budget-friendly pantry staple in our house!  I always keep them on hand because everyone in our house loves them - especiallly the whole wheat ones.

The great thing about Mission tortillas is that they can give you that unexpected twist you need to one of your everyday meals to get your kids to eat it.  I know that my kids start to stick their noses up at certain meals if I'm always cooking them the same way.  All of a sudden one day when they wouldn't eat an egg sandwich anymore on an english muffin, when I switched and made the egg sandwich on a Mission tortilla, they all of a sudden loved it!! Go figure!  Some things we love them for at our house is a substitute for bread in sandwiches, veggie quesadillas or soft chicken tacos.

Mission Flour Tortillas contain 0 grams Trans fat per serving and are cholesterol free. They are available in 3 different sizes depending on what you need them for:  small (6"), medium (8") and large (10”) and they are available in major grocery stores nationwide.

If you head over to http://www.missionmenus.com/ there are lots of great ideas for quick and easy, kid-friendly back-to-school meals using Mission Flour Tortillas.

Getting to Know You...8/22

I'm joining in again this week over at Mannland5 in Getting to Know You...

Getting to know YOU

This week's questions are.....

1. If you could host a Reality TV show, which one would it be? Survivor - it's my favorite reality show and who wouldn't want to travel the world where each season is located?

2. Do you put your seatbelt on before or after you start the car? I put it on after I start the car.  No fail, everytime I start the car, one of my kids asks for something, so instead of having to undo my seatbelt, I just wait until the requests are done before we take off.

3. Shave or hair removal cream?  Shave

4. What's your favorite feature in a house?  I love fireplaces (and lots of closets!)

5. What is your favorite "Fall" scent?  hmm - too many!!! I love cinnamon, pumpkin and apple!

6. What tv show are you looking forward to seeing the most this Fall??  Survivor

7. Personal Shopper or Personal Chef? Personal Shopper

8. What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of "Fall"?  pumpkins

Family Fun Day!

On the weekends we try to do lots of activities with the whole family together - the kids love Saturdays (they know that day as the first day of the week where Daddy is home all day!)  A few weekends ago, we took a hike together at a state park down the street from us - the kids all had so much fun!  The day was so hot out, so it was so nice to be in the woods (lots of shade!!) to let them explore and run around.

Why stay on the path when there are cool rocks to climb?

The baby has the best spot for the hike :)

Checking out the stream....

Towards the end, the baby wanted to get out and join in on the hike....here is her big sister helping her out...

What are some things your family likes to do together?  I'm always up for new ideas :)

I Must Be Crazy

A few weeks ago on one of our really hot days, my kids all wanted to go swimming (badly!).  I had forgotten that I promised the night before that I would blow up their kiddie pool for them to play in the next day.  I had also forgotten where our pumps were (we have both a hand pump and an electric pump).  So after some wasted time of looking for the pumps, I decided to give it a try just blowing it up with my own hot air!!!!!!

Almost 2 hours later (yes, 2 hours!) - I did it!!!!

Don't worry, I wasn't blowing for 2 hours straight - I needed to take a few rests myself just to keep from passing out and then of course with a 4, 2 and 1 year old, they forced many breaks for me between needing snacks, drinks, help with the potty, a diaper change, and the constant question of "when are you going to be done" and the list can go on and on......

But I think it was all worth it in the end - look at how much they were having....

So what do you think, am I crazy?  Or just crazy in love with those kids :)

Getting to Know You...

I know I've been m.i.a. for a little while - we went away for our summer vacation and the week before and the week after were beyond hectic!  It's amazing all the prep work needed to do before you go away and then the catch up that is necessary when you get home....

So I should be back in action now for awhile.....I have a a few great reviews and giveaways that will be coming up - so be sure to keep your eyes open :)

To start my blogging back up, I was going to join MannLand5 in Getting To Know You....

Getting to know YOU

This week's questions are:

1. What kind of athlete has the hottest body? Hmmm - not reallly sure

2. Are you a planner or a procrastinator? Believe it or not, I'm actually both.  I love to plan everything, but then when it comes time to actually do it, I procrastinate....

3. Diet or regular (soda)? Neither - I stick to water or selter :)

4. What's your one "must have" for Fall? I can't wait to start wearing my jeans and hooded sweatshirt again!

5. What's your favorite fast food restaurant? I really try to avoid fast food - but occasionally I love a Wendy's cheeseburger with a frostie!

6. What do you think is the sexiest profession for a guy? Not really sure - I do like when my husband is fixing up stuff around the house in jeans and a white t-shirt.  So does an accountant who is handy at home count?

7. Did you wear braces? Nope - I have a space between 2 teeth that now drives me crazy, but I always swore it didn't bother me as a kid (because I never wanted to go through w/ braces)

8. Would you rather have a guy that's super sexy or kind? Definitely needs to be kind (but that is a quality that can also make him sexy)

If you'd like to join in this week, head over to MannLand5 and link up!
